The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion

A number-one New York Times bestseller when it was originally published, THE SILMARILLION is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before THE HOBBIT.

Chris
Far more laborious reading than Lord of the Rings, but if you are interested in the world of Middle-Earth, you won't find a better history book for it.

Kirasha
Of all the tales of Middle Earth, this is where JRRT's love of mythology and language really shows through.

TimW
I really enjoyed this book, its a bit dry like everyone says so if you are having a hard time just read it one short story at a time.

mhy
Difficult to read, tons of names and places, but hey, i was a die hard tolkien fan for quite some time.

Templar
Much better to read it as a history/mythology book than as a novel. If you do, you'll get a lot out of it.

tx85
More like a history book, but good for Tolkein fans.

Cool back-story and history for Middle Earth. Sets the stage for Hobbit/LOTR nicely.

For those who didn't want the Lord of the Rings to finish, this is the best way to take in the whole view. Contains some wonderful tales.

For some reason, it took me a LOOOONG time to finish reading this. I just couldn't get into it. Very interesting mythology behind "the rings" though.

I read this book when I was in 6th grade. I found it to be a long read at the time, but definitely a good store. If you love Tolkein, read this book.

Seul
I have read few books as moving as The Silmarillion. It isn't as accessible as Tolkien's other books, but it's more powerful. It is an epic that inspires epics.

#jonthegm
It took me around four attempts throughout grade/highschool to "get" this one. Once I got it, though, the magic and majesty of Tolkien's poetry shines through.

Striker
The mythological background of Tolkien's fantasy world, this book has it all...gods, demons, great heroes and villains. It's like greek myth with elves.

I have read the trilogy and the Hobbit. I got about 50 pages in and couldnt go any further. More a refrence tool than novel.
