Much more approachable than the Lord of the Rings, but less grand. If you're looking for enjoyable fantasy, the Hobbit is a fantastic place to start.

Excellent story, great preview of Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote it for his kids, ain't that cool:)

Kirasha
Written for children, it doesn't have the depth of the later stories. But, it's still a good, rousing adventure. Makes for an excellent intro to his work.

Loved it as a kid. If you can't face LOTR yet then this is a good intro to Tolkien's world.

While Lord of the Rings trilogy is a sprawling epic adventure, meant for adults, The Hobbit is meant for a younger [much younger?] audience. Just 'OK'.
