This is the origin of "Big Brother." One of my favorite distopia books. If you like Brave New World or Farenheit 451, you'll like this. A little slow, but great.

Good writing and general plot. However, the ending was anti-climatic and ruined the book for me. I think schools use it because its great to anylse.

I liked this one better than 1984, actually. Depressing, though.

I liked Brave New World better, but 1984 is one of those books you just have to read. We've always been at war with Eastasia...

I’ve read it some years ago in Portuguese, my mother tongue, and loved it. Made me think a lot. Now I’m reading it in English and I’m really enjoying agai.

Whenever I read this book, it always invades the rest of my day. Not sure if it's a good thing or not, but the book sure keeps me entranced.

haven't we all, deep down, learned to love big brother? that we don't admit this to ourselves on a daily basis makes orwell that much more right.

Nightmarishly relevant to today. Utterly disturbing, and absolutely fascinating. IMO, should be required reading for any serious student.

It's really fabulous.

Somewhat obtuse and plodding, but worth a read for its historical and literary importance and chillingly prophetic commentary on the modern political climate.

George Orwell is my twin personality. Shut up Jamie...they can hear every word you say!

Should be retitled '2008'

Not an easy read, but it should be required reading.

Much of the way we think about politics comes from this book alone.

A classic of modern dystopian literature, Orwell does a masterful job of examining freedom of thought, and extrapolates blind obedience to its eventual result.

Classic and important.

More current than ever. This book should be read by everyone (literally), no matter if you're into the genre.

The only thing creepier than the book coming to life would have been if it actually happened in 1984.
