This is the best history of the US I've read -- and does it ever dish the dirt. All the stuff that they'd much rather you didn't know about -- and well written =D. -

Iain M Banks can do no wrong. Not as edgy as 'Uses of War' for e.g but a damn fine yarn =D. -

My favorite bit was the chapter on lost colours -- but this is a rich, gorgeous substantial work -- esp. if you're interested in Dutch/Flemish painting. =D. -

A sprawling epic in which most of the main characters get killed off... although many return from the dead. Whats not to love! =D. -
