Overview:
Norton Security is a household name. They are the cornerstone of the data security market for years. Norton Online Backup promises to do the same by backing up your files to the cloud. File backup is available for Windows and Mac only. Some neat features include scheduled backups and continuous backup.
You can also backup by file type, location and establish rules for file inclusions and exclusions. These are all very nice touches that are missing some from the best backup options on the market.
The software, however, is mostly browser-based. There is a desktop app or client but it’s limited. Signing up is quick, easy and no credit card is required. All you need is a valid email address, password, and phone number to get started. You can try out the full version of Norton Online Backup for free with a 30-day trial.
If you decide you like the service, however, you need to cough up $49.99 a year for its deluxe account of 25GB of storage. A Norton Online Backup subscription can cover up to five computers. But that’s a lot of dough for a measly 25GB of storage. One computer’s hard drive could easily surpass that.
Norton does offer versioning of files for up to 90 days. This is super helpful when you want to reverse an unwanted change or restore corrupted files. Norton offers true archiving at phenomenal speeds. Norton Online Backup is the fastest with downloads and backups clocking in at 0:49 minutes per 100MB. And that could be so given the limited amount of storage the plans allow.
Pricing:
Standard backup cost $39.99 and includes one device for one year with one year of protection. Deluxe backup cost $49.99 for up to five devices for one year with 1 year of protection. For small businesses with 20 or less employees and no server, Norton Small Business is available at $99.99 for up to five devices and one year of protection. Norton Small Business includes backup for 20 devices at $249.99.
Pros:
Choose between restoring, downloading, emailing, and purging files on the web-based browser. Unbelievably fast backup and recovery. Deluxe package includes up to five PCs per account.
Con:
Norton Online Backup doesn’t provide mobile apps for Android or iOS. Whether to backup data or to access it, mobile devices are not supported. That includes external drives. It’s one of the only online backup providers not to do so. They do not offer private encryption. Odd considering their reputation is built on security. You’re better off accessing the interface on a browser. The desktop client just doesn’t do the trick. Norton is far too expensive for the amount of storage. There are way more affordable options with more to offer.
Conclusion:
If you’re looking for affordable, unlimited storage, Norton Online Backup isn’t the one. You may already have their free storage if you subscribe to their Symantec Norton Security Premium service. If you’re solely in the market for a backup service, you don’t have to look long or hard for a better value.
