Eating a balanced, healthy diet isn’t the easiest thing to do when so much junk food is ready to grab and go. But Freshly takes all the hassle out of eating a healthy dinner in almost no time at all. They don’t just deliver the ingredients to your doorstep. They deliver the whole meal, fully prepared and ready for you to heat up and eat.
And with all their meals prepared in a dedicated gluten-free and peanut-free facility, those with celiac disease and peanut allergies can eat confidently.
To start, decide if you want four, six, nine, or 12 meals delivered each week. Each meal is one serving and you can mix and match, getting as many servings of each meal as you’d like. There are 26 dinners to choose from weekly and some weeks breakfasts are an option, too.
Choose among high-protein, vegetarian, paleo, low-carb, and low-calorie meals each week. Recipes are also labeled if they’re soy-free and dairy-free. For example:
- Sausage & peppers with cauliflower rice is low-calorie, low-carb, paleo, dairy-free, and soy-free.
- Sicilian-style chicken Parmesan with broccoli is low-carb, low-calorie, and soy-free.
- Penne Bolognese is soy-free.
- Veggie baked penne with sautéed zucchini and spinach is vegetarian, low-calorie, and soy-free.
- Three-bean ancho turkey chili with cheddar cheese is low-calorie.
Freshly makes a point of ensuring all their meals are peanut-free and gluten-free. They don’t use any refined sugars or hydrogenated oils. The meals are cooked for you so all you have to do is heat them up. One meal is one serving, unlike other services where meals are two or more servings. This makes it a great service for singles or people who want one serving to have for lunches.
The meals have an “eat by” date of four to five days from delivery if they’re kept in the refrigerator but they can also be stored in the freezer, making it easy to take advantage of the lower-priced 12-meal plan to stock up on meals. They take just a few minutes longer to reheat from frozen.
Freshly doesn’t offer gift subscriptions, but you can have more than one subscription under your account or change your delivery address for a week so you can easily send meals to someone else as a gift or if you’re out of town, have the meals sent to where you’ll be. Since they don’t have family plans, you can use multiple subscriptions and order several servings of the same meal to accommodate any number of people.
Most of Freshly’s packaging is recyclable. All the cardboard and plastic can go in your curbside recycling program. The insulation is made of recycled denim which should go in the trash, although it is biodegradable and will break down. The gel packs can be reused and when you’re ready to dispose of them, put the gel in the trash and recycle the plastic casing.
- 4 meals per week are $12.50 per meal
- 6 or 9 meals per week are $9.99 per meal
- 12 meals per week are $8.99 per meal
- Free shipping
Freshly does not use any additives and preservatives, so their meals are a healthier alternative to frozen meals purchased at the grocery store. They offer more meals to choose from than most meal kit delivery services and each meal is one serving, making it great for singles. Since each meal heats up quickly in the microwave they are also a cheaper, healthier alternative to buying lunch at work regularly. And while most meal services offer allergen-free meals, they can’t guarantee that there’s no cross-contamination and recommend people with severe allergies don’t use their services. Freshly makes a point of ensuring their meals are safe to eat which provides peace of mind if you or someone in your family is a celiac or has a peanut allergy. Unfortunately Freshly only delivers to about half of the United States.
Freshly makes it so easy to stock your refrigerator and freezer with healthy meals, there’s no reason not to give it a try. They are great for if you’re expecting guests and don’t want the expense of a restaurant or the mess and work of making a large meal at home. You can fill the freezer of a friend who’s sick or a new parent, giving them the gift of quick, healthy dinner. Send a few off to your child in college so you can be sure they’re getting a good meal occasionally. The possibilities of what you can do with a Freshly dinner are endless.
