Freelancers and consultants often enjoy the freedom of variable schedules, remote working, and being able to call the shots in their own business. However, there is a downside, they are giving up the steady income that comes with a traditional job. In order to ride out the ups and downs of variable income, they often rely on complex spreadsheets, or just end up “winging it”, trying to make as much money as they can and hope for the best.
Harpoon is software for freelancers that aims to alleviate the roller-coaster ride of freelance finances. In addition to providing the time-tracking, invoicing, and expense tracking expected of today’s freelance financial apps, Harpoon goes a step further by requiring that each user set a yearly goal, and tracking progress towards that goal.
What We Liked
We were immediately impressed with the simple design of Harpoon. The co-founders, Andy Johnson and Ryan Battles, are both freelance web designers, and their collective years of building online experiences shines through in Harpoon’s interface.
However, it takes much more than a pretty interface to become an indispensable application for today’s freelancers. We also liked the way that Harpoon keeps useful data front-and-center within the app. Instead of burying key financial insights into pdf reports that a Freelancer would have to take time to generate and review, the user is greeted with a metrics dashboard as soon as they log into Harpoon. They can view their current profit/loss, average revenue per day, even days of vacation earned so far that can be taken and still safely hit their yearly goal.
Pricing
Another benefit of Harpoon is that there is only one pricing tier that includes everything for a single user. With the $19 monthly fee a freelancer receives:
- Unlimited Clients
- Unlimited Projects
- Unlimited Invoices
For an even sweeter deal, pay for a yearly subscription to Harpoon and the price goes down to $15/month, one of the lowest prices for any invoicing app we’ve seen.
Harpoon starts each user off with a 14-day free trial without need of a credit card, making it easy for freelancers to give it a risk-free test drive.
Conclusion
Some of the first web based (SaaS) applications to replace desktop software were financial applications. Over the past several years many of these applications have gone unchanged, and focus primarily on tracking time and getting paid. While these are necessary features, Harpoon goes a step further to provide all of that plus key financial insight into the health of a freelance business. By tracking collected and expected revenue and providing that in an attractive interface, today’s freelancers can more easily handle the ebb and flow of Freelance income.
Harpoon is the perfect financial app for freelancers and small businesses that need to track time and invoice clients.
